Kwara NUJ chairman raises alarm over high rate of poverty

Stakeholders, Non Governmental Organizations as well as well meaning individuals have been advised to embark on humanitarian services in order to alleviate poverty in the society.

The Chairman of the Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Abiodun AbdulKareem at the Olusola Saraki Pen House when the Grassroot Aides Initiative, a Non Governmental Organization led by its Executive Director, Dr Kehinde Khadijat Kadiri paid a courtesy visit on him.

He emphasized that the war against poverty and unemployment must be a collaborative one between relevant stakeholders and government's agencies towards eradicating it and making life more bearable for downtrodden people.

AbdulKareem however underscored the need for government to be alive to its responsibilities of providing basic social infrastructural facilities, amenities, tackling unemployment and reducing poverty level.

He also lamented high rate of poverty in the country, hence the need for well meaning individuals to use their resources to serve humanity by providing succour for the people.

The NUJ boss commended the Grassroot Aides Initiative for embarking on laudable projects for the widows, school children, aged people and health programmes targeted at the people at the grassroot.

He however pledged the support of the Nigeria Union of Journalists to the NGO's programmes and other relevant agencies established or working towards reducing poverty level and creating employment for the people.

Earlier, the Executive Director of the Grassroot Aides Initiative, Doctor Kehinde Khadijat Kadiri had highlighted some of the projects embarked upon by the organization, including rebuilding the dilapidated muddy house of an aged woman, instructional materials for school children, clothing materials and sinking of a borehole. Dr. Kadiri said the projects are executed through photography on social media, pointing out that funds used to execute the projects are sourced outside the country from different individuals and appealed to well meaning individuals and organizations to support the Organization in touching the lives of the downtrodden people positively.
