Kwara Assembly make case for State untapped resources

The Kwara State House of Assembly has restated its determination in ensuring that,the state government explores its vast mineral and agricultural resources,as means of making the state self- sustaining.

To this end, it has called on the state Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed to immediately constitute a mining committee, to be known as "The Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Agency", as provided in the Minerals and Mining Act of 2007 to enable the state reap the full benefits of its vast mineral deposits across the state.

The House took the decision, following a motion titled "Repositioning Activities of Illegal Miners In Kwara State" raised by a member representing Share/Oke ode Constituency, Hon.Jimoh Akanni AbdulRahman.

Reading the resolutions of the House, the Speaker, Dr. Ali Ahmad said to fast track the setting up of the Committee by the Governor, the house has constituted a 5 man committee to immediately liaise with the Governor this week on the need to ensure immediate take-off of the committee, in view of its enormous benefits to the state.

The House also urged the security agencies in the state, to swing into action by closing up all illegal mining areas with a view to restoring normal legal mining activities.

Hon. Akanni Abdul Rahman had while raising the motion said the state is now witnessing influx of illegal miners and disclosed that the 2007 Act had empowered the state government to constitute a committee which according to him would serve as link between the Federal and Kwara state government in the task of enabling the state reap the enormous benefits of the vast mineral deposits in the state.
