Husbands petition IGP over wives' postings

Date: 2012-02-10

Husbands of about 375 female police officers under Zone Eight command of the Nigeria Police have petitioned the acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, over what they described as inconsiderate and abnormal posting of their wives.

An Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Ephraim Amakulor, had on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, allegedly issued posting letters to about 500 officers in the zonal command in Ilorin to proceed to Lokoja, in Kogi State, in a re-organisation bid to combat the menace of Boko Haram and other forms of crime in the state.

Nigerian Tribune investigations revealed that out of the affected 500, 375 were females.

Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Ilorin on Thursday, the husbands of the female police officers, who besieged the ‘A’ divisional police station in Ilorin, said through their spokesperson, Peter Akhigbe, that some of the women were pregnant, some had just put to bed, while others were newly married.

He said the transfer was capable of causing separation and broken down marriages.

He further said that their wives had told them that they were not interested in the postings, eapecially in view of the fact that they would have to look for accommodation by themselves, adding that anything could happen when their wives squat all around.

When contacted on the issue, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Kwara State police command, Dabo Ezekiel, said the transfer was done in the force headquarters in Abuja, adding that the aggrieved husbands should direct their complaints to the Force headquarters.

Ezekiel said he could not give further comments when asked to speak on accommodation and allowance as raised by the husbands of the affected female police officers.
