Oke-Ero LGEA Sch. Graduation: Don Advocates Use Of Mother Tongue In Schools

Date: 2012-07-30

A university don, Dr Oladipo Ajiboye, has called on the Federal Government to evolve an education policy that will pave way for the use of mother tongue in Nigerian schools.

Ajiboye, Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics, African and Asian Studies, University of Lagos, made the call on Friday at the graduation and prize giving day of LGEA School, Ilale, Oke Ero Local Government Area of Kwara.

The don, who was the Guest Speaker at the occasion, said the use of foreign language in impacting knowledge on Nigerian children was counterproductive to the development of education.

Ajiboye urged the government to emulate developed countries such as Russia, China and Japan, which teach their children with their mother tongue.

"The use of local languages will facilitate teaching by teachers, comprehension by students and improve both the traditional, western or conventional education in Nigeria."

He warned that the desire of the country to achieve 'genuine' development would be elusive unless the government changed its posture of playing lip service to the development of the education.

Another speaker, Mr. Taiwo Atolagabe, the Controller, Current Affairs, Kwara State Broadcasting Corporation, Ilorin, said the development of the education sector was a tripartite role by the government, teachers and parents.

He said that parents played significant role in the destiny of their children and urged them (parents) to give their children the best education.
