The New Year celebration was peaceful in Kwara State.
Though some residents on Sunday threw bangers and fireworks, in defiance of the ban by the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olusola Amore, on the use of bangers and fireworks, reports from across the state indicated there was no disaster or violence.
Residents had trooped to worship centres during the cross-over service to thank God for sparing their lives while plain and uniformed security personnel were deployed in strategic places.
There were also patrols by security operatives to forestall any security breach in the state.
Amore, through the command's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, said 3,000 police personnel were deployed in the state while the Kwara State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr. Pedro Ideba, through the command's PRO, Mr. Henry Bilesanmi, said the command deployed 2,500 personnel across the state.
Amore also confirmed that there was no violence, adding that there was no arrest as of the time of filing the report.
The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed; the Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr. Ali Ahmad; and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, expressed hope that things would change for the better in 2017.
Ahmed in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Dr. Muideen Akorede, wished all citizens and residents of the state a joyous and prosperous 2017.
He said he was hopeful that the challenges facing the state and the nation would end soon.
