No dividends of democracy in 17yrs - Gambari

Date: 2016-06-15

The? Chancellor, Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, said that Nigeria is lagging behind in terms of delivery of democratic dividends.

This situation, he lamented, happened, despite the commitments of Nigerians to build the biggest democracy in Africa and one of the best in the world.

Gambari stated this while speaking at the fourth convocation ceremony of the university held at the weekend.

He said: ?"In the 17 years since the emergence of the Fourth Republic, Nigerians have strived to build their country into Africa's and one of the world's biggest democracies. However, there has been a deficit of delivery which, in popular parlance, is referred to as the absence of democratic dividends.

While explaining the way forward, Gambari said: "In the pursuit of the contemporary agenda of change, close attention will need to be paid to the measures and steps that would need to be taken to overcome grinding poverty.
