Kwara University holds 4th convocation, launches radio station
Kwara State University has held its fourth convocation and launched its own radio station. Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State called on members of the academia to use their exposure and wealth of experience in their respective fields, to venture into research that would address societal needs. Governor Ahmed made the call in a speech at the fourth Convocation of the Kwara State University, Malete.
The Governor, who was represented by his deputy, Elder Peter Kisira, said, the global economic downturn had compelled states to look inward for positive alternatives to secure sustainable ways of increasing internally generated revenue and harness growth potentials by expanding various revenue bases to complement allocation from the federation.
Governor Ahmed, who is a Visitor to the University, said there was an urgent need to re-orientate students, asking religious organizations, non governmental organizations, community leaders and government at all levels to rise up to challenges in the educational sector.
Delivering his address, the Chancellor of the University, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, listed some of the ongoing TETFund projects in the institution to include: Postgraduate building; KWASU Radio-Television studio and particularly, the construction of a three billion naira high impact central multipurpose library project.
Professor Gambari said the University is grappling with numerous challenges particularly financial problems due to the current economic situation in the country, and solicited the support of organizations and multinational companies as well as well meaning individuals to build the institution further.
In his speech, the Pro Chancellor of the Institution, Saidu Issa, appreciated the support of the state government and called for quick intervention to connect the University to the high tension sub-station at Sawmill as well as improve water services.
Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Abdul Rasheed Na'Allah said the University produced 1,159 students for this year's academic session with 23 first class students.
Professor Na'Allah, said the institution is a research intensive university where all the students are well engaged, adding that scientists of the institution are actively researching Cancer detection and treatment, development of new generation solar cells and energy storage devices. VON reports that at the end of the convocation, the KWASU F.M Radio Station with 100.5 frequency, was commissioned.
