Rejected suitor remanded for allegedly killing lover
A rejected suitor, Mr. Ogundele David, aged 35, who allegedly killed her lover, Miss Tosin Ashinwo (30), an MTN worker; has been remanded in the Federal Prison in Madalla, Kwara State by Mrs. Mercy Adebola of the Ilorin Magistrate's Court. Our correspondent gathered on Thursday that the Kwara State Police Command had arraigned the accused before the court for alleged murdering the lady.
David, who is a teacher at the Landmark University Secondary School, Omu-Aran, was charged with culpable homicide punishable by death, and an attempt to commit culpable homicide contrary to sections 221 and 229 of Penal Code.
It was learnt that the matter was transferred from 'F' Police Station, Ilorin, to the State Department of Criminal Investigation. According to the police report, the accused was at Ashinwo's residence at Tanke, Ilorin, where he met the mother of the deceased, Abiola (65), and made effort to convince the deceased and her mother to accept his marriage proposal.
Ashinwo was said to have refused the marriage proposal on the basis that David was a married man. According to the report, the refusal of the marriage proposal infuriated the accused, who ran into the kitchen, picked a knife and stabbed Ashinowo to death.
"The suspect also stabbed Abiola all over her body till she fell into a coma," the report added. The police stated that the victim's mother was receiving medical treatment at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, adding that her recovery, however, was not certain.
The police further said David, after allegedly committing the offence, fled, but was arrested by security operatives at Oba-Ile, his hometown in Osun State. "Police investigation revealed that you, Ogundele David, callously stabbed the said Tosin Ashinwo, 30 years, and later descended on her mother, Abiola Ashinwo, 65 years. The said Abiola Ashinwo is still receiving treatment at the UITH, Ilorin, and her survival is not certain," the charge read in part.
David pleaded not guilty to the charge and prayed to be granted bail. But the police prosecutor, Mr. Oderinde Abideen, informed the court that investigation into the matter had not been concluded.
He also opposed the defendant's application for bail, saying the offences committed were capital in nature and not bailable. Adebola remanded the accused in the Federal Prison in Madalla, and adjourned the case till June 6, 2016.
