NUT continues strike as KWSG makes partial salary payment

Date: 2016-02-05

The Kwara state chapter of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has insisted that the striking teachers in the state would only call off their over three weeks' old strike if the state government can pay the remaining balance of 10 per cent of the 90 per cent salary of one month released to them recently.

The NUT said if the state government can meet their demand it would allow them to call the state executive council meeting where the possibility of calling off the strike would be decided.

Teachers in both primary and junior secondary schools in the state have been on strike for three weeks now over the inability of the state government to pay four months' salaries.

The state government last Thursday paid 90 per cent instead of 100 per cent salary of one month out of four months being owed teachers and the development prompted teachers to organize a special prayer to seek God's intervention.

The state chairman of the union, Alhaji Musa Abubakar who spoke with journalists in Ilorin after the special prayers organized by the leadership of NUT, said they were ready to go back to work, except that as at last Thursday the Kwara state government had paid only 90 per cent salary of one month.
