Kwara Commissioner Seeks NAN's Support Against Social Ills
Kwara state Commissioner for Information, Mahmood Ajeigbe has on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to support the government in its renews efforts to fight societal ills in the state.
Ajeigbe made the call on Wednesday while he paid a visit to NAN office in Ilorin as part of his tour of media establishments in the state.
He said government has approved the establishment of a department of Civic Orientation in his ministry to educate the public on social ills.
The Commissioner said to achieve the objectives of the new department; cooperation and assistance of competent media houses were needed.
"Our society is spoiled through bad orientation. Only competent media organization such as NAN could rescue our society from such menace we found ourselves in," said.
"I am visiting NAN because government values the contribution of the agency in information dissemination to a very wide audience. "NAN as 'Mother' of all media houses in the country is strategically positioned to help to disseminate government's activities especially in fighting social vices.
"I see NAN as a formidable partner of government in reaching out to the people in the country and beyond as a warehouse of news to other media establishments," Ajeigbe added.
He lamented that corruption, immorality, contravention and other negative acts has eaten deep into the fabrics of the people; both young which he said deserved urgent attention.
The Commissioner listed such vices to include drug abuse, rape, environmental and traffic offences, indecent dressing and cultism which he said were rampart among youths.
Responding, Mr Biodun Esan, NAN State Editor thanked the commissioner for the visit and assured him of the agency's readiness to assist the government in its bid to fight social ills through balanced and objective reporting of events.
