No Going Back on Financial Autonomy to State Houses of Assembly - Speakers
The 36 speakers of the state House of Assembly in the country at the weekend resolved to pursue the issue of financial autonomy and independence by state Houses of Assembly with the presidency to its logical conclusion so as to enhance the quality of legislation and growth of the state legislatures.
The issue of financial autonomy and independence was pursued from state houses of Assembly to the National Assembly during the regime of President Olusegun Obasanjo before it was truncated.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin at the end of a two-day conference organised by the Kwara state House of Assembly in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the new chairman of the Speakers' Conference and Speaker Kebbi state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ismaila Kamba, who spoke on behalf of other members of the conference, said that they would not make same mistake where few state Houses of Assembly opted out of the project.
According to him, "We will try to understand where that bill is and if necessary, we'll refer it back to various Houses of Assemblies for another re-presentation and forward it to Mr. President for assent".
