Kwara shuts clinic where quack performs surgeries
The Kwara State Government has shut an illegal private clinic, Springway Hospital, Oko-Erin, Ilorin.
The owner of the hospital is said to be a PhD holder in Human Kinetics, Olaitan Lanre. According to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Lanre carries out medical functions at the facility illegally.
The state government while ordering the closure, said the action became imperative as the hospital operators reportedly used it for various malpractices, including carrying out surgeries on unsuspecting members of the public.
The Permanent Secretary, state Ministry of Health, Alhaji Abdulrafiu Ayinla, who announced the closure of the facility at a briefing, said it was in response to petitions from the MDCN.
Ayinla, who said the hospital was registered with the ministry, added that the approval was for it to operate as a clinic and maternity having qualified medical and health personnel. He said, "The ministry in conjunction with MDCN closed down the hospital following the arrest of a quack health worker at the hospital."
Ayinla described the alleged illegal activities of the hospital as a disservice to humanity. The permanent secretary, who warned non-medical personnel not run health facilities under any guise, insisted that the state would deal decisively with such persons.
He appealed to members of the public to report any suspicious private hospital to the ministry for proper action and sanction. The MDCN had raided the hospital and recovered many suspected stolen documents, including a medical certificate.
The council's Head of Inspectorate, Dr. Henry Okwuokenye, had said the agency received information that Lanre, operated the facility. He added that Lanre allegedly carried out surgeries as well as other medical duties in the clinic.
