Kwara Speaker supports immunity for NASS leaders

Date: 2015-10-07

The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr. Ali Ahmad, on Tuesday described the plan by the National Assembly to commence the process of amending the Constitution towards ensuring immunity for heads of the three tiers of government as a bold step that would insulate the presiding officers and their deputies from unnecessary distraction.

Ali while reacting to the plan by NASS to create immunity clause for its presiding officers and the Chief Justice of Nigeria said such a development would also facilitate good governance.

In a statement by his media aide, Sanni Abdulrahman, the Speaker who is the immediate past chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Justice, said the plan was apt.

He stated that if the head of the Executive arm of government could enjoy immunity in the Constitution, the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and their deputies as well as the Chief Justice of Nigeria should enjoy similar benefit to ensure that no arm of government was sanctimonious.
