FOMWAN Supports Probe Of Past Public Officers, Lamorde
The Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has threw its weight behind the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to probe some corrupt former public officers.
The association also said that there was nothing wrong in the Senate's probing of the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Lamorde. It, however warned that probing of suspected corrupt Nigerians either by the executive or legislature must be used as vendetta.
The national Amirah (president) of FOMWAN, Hajia Amina Omoti made the stand of the association known at a news conference on the association’s 30th years anniversary in Ilorin, Kwara State on Thursday.
"We should be objective and transparent in conducting the probes. Nobody should be afraid of being probed so long he doesn't have skeleton in his cupboard.
" The Senate could probe EFCC chairman since somebody lodged a complaint. We will support anything that will stamp out corruption in the country. But, this should not be used as a vendetta,"she stated. The FOMWAN Amirah expressed concern over the use of young girls wearing Hijab to perpetrate havoc in the North- East.
She, however decried what she described as "the unsolicited advice to government in different print and electronic media to ban its (Hijab) use". Hijab wearing among Muslim women according to her is a prescribed dress code from the Holy Quran.
She said that any attempt to ban the use of the Hijab is tantamount to trampling on the rights of the Muslim woman to worship. Hajia Omoti, whose address was read by Hajia Farida Yusuf commended efforts of government of President Muhammadu Buhari at ensuring an end to the menace of insurgency.
She added that Nigeria is a multi-religious country where freedom of religion and worship is guaranteed in the nation's Constitution.
"While urging government to remain focused in its fight to end the insurgency and not be distracted by those calling for the ban on the use of Hijab, FOMWAN appeals to Muslims Ummah to remain calm and law abiding and resist all attempts to be provoked and continue to pray for this government to succeed and for peace to return to our dear country, Nigeria", she said. About 1, 200 participants within and outside Nigeria attended the 2015 national conference, with the theme, Religion and Ethnic Plurality; Implication for National Development.
The FOMWAN national Amirah said that the association in its 30 years of existence had achieved success in areas of health care, education, socio-economic empowerment of women and community development across all the state chapters through its health related activities; hospitals, schools, orphanages, vocational centres and business concerns.
She also said that the association through the humanitarian services has made modest impact in ameliorating the plight of victims of the insurgency. Speaking on the fate of abducted Chibok girls, Hajia Omoti urged the federal government to discuss with all groups necessary to secure release of the kidnapped girls, "even it means talking or negotiating with the devils".
