Road transport employers kick against merger with NURTW
Members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Kwara state chapter have kicked against the planned merger of the union with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state.
The union also called on law enforcement agencies in the state to stop possible break down of law and order among transporters in the state.
In a letter to the Kwara state Commissioner of Police dated August 19, 2015 signed by the state chairman of the RTEAN, Alhaji Salman Ayoku, the transport union said there were alleged plan by members of a sister transport union to disturb operations of RTEAN members in Offa town.
Ayoku, who is also the north central zonal chairman of the RTEAN, said the plan was to stop existence of the union with the alleged plan to merge it with the NURTW. Members of the NURTW and RTEAN were engaged in violent clash resulting in the death of one person few weeks ago in the ancient town of Offa, Kwara state.
"There is a plan to cause another disturbance of public peace in Offa and Kwara state in general in a bid to preventing RTEAN from operating its transport business having instructed all its members in Offa and the state at large on the merger directive.
"We wish to reiterate that RTEAN and NURTW are gazette bodies authorised by law to carry their respective transport businesses independently without interference whatever from anybody or quarters and to that end, it will be unlawful for any other body or association to compel it to join any form of merger for purposes of transportation business as the NURTW is doing in this case," he said.
