Between Federal Lawmakers and Senate President's Wife
All efforts to fight the hydra-headed monster called corruption by successive administrations in the country have never yielded any fruitful result. That was why the promise made by President Muhammadu Buhari to fight corruption and bring those who have used their privileged positions to embezzle government resources to justice received accolades from Nigerians.
However, the recent event where some National Assembly members left their constitutional responsibility to accompany the wife of Senate President, Toyin Saraki to the office of the Economic and Finance Crimes Commission (EFCC) has left doubt in the mind of many Nigerians on how prepared is the legislature to work with the executive in the fight against corruption.
Toyin Saraki was said to be under probe in relation to several contracts executed by companies said to be linked to her while her husband held sway as the Kwara State governor. The Executive Chairman, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) Comrade Debo Adeniran has described as national embarrassment the decision of some National Assembly members who abandoned the job they were elected to do and followed Mrs Saraki to the office of the anti-graft agency.
"One cannot but wonder how far President (Muhammadu) Buhari would be able to go in his avowed war against corruption in this country, if the very lawmakers who are expected to give him the needed support through the provision of enabling legal framework with which to successfully prosecute the war, are openly, though tacitly, fraternising with corruption by turning themselves into bodyguards of a suspected corruption criminal." Adeniran compared the incident to that witnessed during Obasanjo's days, when Bode George was being accompanied by praise-singers who had to roll out drums, clad in 'Aso Ebi' and danced in and around the court premises in solidarity with the accused each time he appeared in court to answer to corruption charges.
Many Nigerians were surprised that Senator Dino Melaye who has been campaigning against corruption was among the senators that accompanied the wife of Saraki to anti-graft agency. Shortly after the emergence of Saraki as Senate President in June, some senators perceived to be loyal to the Senate President promised that Saraki would support the anti-graft policy of President Buhari. "The Like minds senators", assured Nigerians that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, will work towards the success of the anti - corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration.
The senators through a statement by their Coordinator, Dino Melaye, also pledged that Saraki would not in any way, be a stumbling block against Buhari's anti corruption posture. For the Buhari's anti corruption campaign to achieve its desired goal, there is need for members of the National Assembly to cooperate with the executive. Though Saraki on several occasions has reiterated his determination to work with the President to fight corruption and restore sanity in governance,, many analysts believe that it is just mere rhetoric until he has prove otherwise.
Speaking when the chairman of Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), Mr. Ekpo Nta led other board members of the commission to brief him and other senators on the activities of the anti-graft body, Saraki declared that the 8th Senate under him would not be a safe haven for corruption, as some want Nigerians to believe. He further declared that there will be no more hiding place for corrupt elements in the country.
