Activities at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) have virtually grounded to a halt as health workers, under the aegis of Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) yesterday commenced an indefinite strike.

Chairman of the Association of Resident Doctors at UITH, Dr. Oyinlola Oluwagbemiga, told our correspondent that they began the strike at the expiration of a 50-day ultimatum to the management to address their grievances.

The strike has become a matter of litigation as the hospital management bring the doctors before the National Industrial Court in Akure, Ondo State. The case was adjourned till Thursday May 28, 2015 while the court ordered parties to maintain status quo.

To worsen health care delivery in the hospital, health workers under NUAHP also declared an indefinite strike on Monday.

NUAHP is an umbrella body of health workers including physiotherapists, dieticians, medical laboratory scientists, radiographers/imaging scientists, speech therapists, optometrists, dental therapists, pharmacists, dental technologists, clinical psychologists, information managers and others in the health sector.

Chairman of NUAHP, Comrade Oluwumi Olutunde, who addressed newsmen at the end of an emergency congress to appraise its week-long warning strike, said the union would not consider any review of the situation until all its demands were met by government.
