KWASU canvasses support for Saraki as Senate president
Kwara state University (KWASU), Malete, Kwara state has urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to consider efforts of members of new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) in the election victory of the party to support Senator Bukola Saraki for the position of the senate president.
Speaking at a forum of academic experts organised by the institution at Malete Friday, various lectures delivered said that consideration for emergence of senate president in the eighth National Assembly should go beyond geo-political zoning arrangement.
The lecturers also said that eighth National Assembly should be led by a man of good character that should be devoid of sectional sentiments and ideas.
The lecturers at the forum include Professor Saka Mahmood, deputy speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly, Professor Gana Yisa, Drs. Fatai Aremu and Olayinka Azeez of Kwara State University, Dr. Adegbenga Aladegbola of the department of Political Science, Adekunle Ajasin University, Dr. Jeremiah Omotola of Redeemer University, Ede, among others.
The speakers, who decried open greed, corruption, and impersonation which they said characterised first few years of senate legislature in the country, called on leadership of APC, the elected senators and other stakeholders on the issue to allow patriotic consideration take preeminence over primordial sentiments.
According to Professor Gana Yisa, three main political groups of CPC, ACN and PDP formed the APC, explaining that the CPC had taken the position of the president-elect, while the ACN had taken the position of the vice-president-elect, adding that the position of the senate president should be given to a member of the PDP, who is Senator Bukola Saraki.
Dr. Fatai Aremu, who said that Nigeria is at a critical political juncture and currently passing through a moment of change, added that a strong and credible National Assembly was needed by the incoming government to bring about a more prosperous nation.
The vice-chancellor of the KWASU, Professor AbdulRasheed Na'Allah, who was represented by Provost College of Humanities, Professor Saka Mahmood, declared endorsement of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate president by the university.
"Senator Saraki is our own. And we have every right; be it moral and political to support him being a former two-term governor of the state, just as well as we know him by his deeds, performance and character. Beyond that emotional issues, we have gone academic in our support for his candidature as the best with qualification, quality, evidence and data for that position of Senate president", he said.
