Kwara assembly suspends Chief Whip
The Kwara State House of Assembly on Friday in Ilorin suspended its Chief Whip, Alhaji Iliasu Ibrahim, representing Ipaye/Molete/Oloru Constituency, for three months.
Ibrahim had, in a petition to the House, accused the Speaker, Mr. Razaq Atunwa, of official high handedness and financial impropriety.
But the House on Thursday adopted the findings and recommendations of the House Committee on Ethics, Privileges Public Service and Judiciary, chaired by Mr. Kamadeen Fagbemi, which had earlier cleared Atunwa of the allegations.
The House decided to suspend Ibrahim on the grounds that his allegations were false and were capable of eroding the integrity of Atunwa and the entire House.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Prof. Mohammed Yisa, who presided over the sitting, said the sanction would serve as a deterrent to other members who may want to engage in actions that could undermine the integrity of the House and bring it to public ridicule and opprobrium.
Yisa added that the action of the petitioner had not only affected the integrity of Atunwa, but that of the entire House.
He said that Ibrahim's action was capable of damaging the existing cordial relationship among the diverse ethno-religious groups in the state, if not nipped in the bud.
In his reaction to the suspension, Ibrahim said he would abide by the resolution of the House, adding that he would remain a loyal and committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party.
In an interview with journalists, Fagbemi said the committee gave all the parties in the matter fair hearing during the period of the committee's investigation in the matter.
He said the matter should be put behind the House so that it could continue to perform its duties efficiently and unhindered.
