OPINION: Is it really good here in Kwara? By Anifowoshe Titilope.

Date: 2015-02-27

In my usual inconsistency of changing channels almost every 5 minutes, I was attracted by the green land I saw on channels TV. My mouth was dramatically agape when I heard "it's good here" and I saw a slim, dark complexion cute man, dressed in agbada,I saw students sitted in a well arranged and neat classroom as opposed to the normal classrooms I see in Kwara state, the Kwara Hotel displayed in the documentary is in fact the camera 360 version of the Hotel I know.

Everything I saw in the advert is the upgraded form of everything I know. I had to slap myself in the face to be sure that I wasn't asleep.

Is it really good in Kwara state? Or should I say “is it really good in Ilorin?”

Of course, Kwarans are very friendly, the cost of living here is very reasonable, residents of GRA enjoy a lot of privileges (I mean good roads, stable power supply, e.t.c), our roads in Tanke are lit only when NEPA remembers us, our roads are flooded when it rains due to the absence of adequate availability of drainage channels, our secondary and primary school buildings are dilapidated, only the children of the rich can afford our state University tuition fees, our streets are littered with the pictures of the emperor of our beloved state, only the capital city is truly a "city".

Is it really good in Kwara state?

Leadership revolves around the same set of cabals; no matter how vibrant or articulate you are, you can never make it to the top so far you are not loyal to "the leader". Contracts are awarded only based on affiliation. Our state blossoms more on the social media rather than the real life. If you criticise "the emperor" you are in trouble.

Our public offices are no longer elective but selective, only the "leader" selects who gets there!

Is it really good here?

Our Economy revolves only around the taxi, the market, the banks, the mall and even politics. The government cannot boast of generating up to 30% of its allocation.

Kwara state can do better if only our government can diversify and channel development to all parts of the state.

Is it really good here?
