Date: 2014-12-10

The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Mr Salihu Garba, has urged parents not to allow their wards to be used as thugs in the forthcoming 2015 elections.

Garba said this in Kosubosu during a familiarisation tour of Baruten Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner of Police, who decried the rising rate of crime, especially cultism and unlawful possession of arms among the young people, however, described people Baruten local government as peaceful.

He also warned politicians to desist from politics of acrimony and bitterness.

In his response to the challenges facing Kosubosu Police Divisional Headquarters, Garba said that the police, according to the Inspector-General, would soon distribute patrol vehicles to all divisional formations across the country.

“We had an interaction with the IG who said that he had ordered for new patrol vehicles. This time around, it is not going to be patrol van alone, it will be backed with an ambulance for rescue operation.

“Since the police are always the first to arrive at the accident scene, we are to carry out our rescue operation with an ambulance,” he said.

The police boss also pledged to look into the shortage of manpower as complained by the Kosubosu Divisional Police Officer (DPO), DSP Yusuf Raheem.

He added that efforts were also in top gear to boost communication among the police formations in the state.

The security chief, however, advised his men to be prudent in spending and have a concrete plan ahead their retirement.

He also solicited for more cooperation between the members of the Police Community Relations Committee and the police personnel.

Earlier in his address of welcome, the DPO of Kosubosu Divisional Headquarter said that Baruten was a peaceful place, except for culpable homicide and mischief among the Fulani herdsmen.

Raheem also stated that the local council had been of immense assistance to the police with the renovation of their station that was burnt by an irate mob in 2010.

He requested for more personnel in the formation as well as communication gadgets to link the formations with the command headquarters and the control room.
