Kwara Assembly Urges Implementation Of Grazing Reserve Law

Date: 2014-11-27

The Kwara State House of Assembly on Wednesday asked the state government to fully implement the grazing reserve law in order to put an end to the incessant crisis between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in the state.

The House made the request in its resolution after adopting the report of an ad hoc committee that investigated a violent clash that erupted between herdsmen and farmers in Onire district of Asa local government area of the state.

The Deputy Speaker, Prof. Gana Yissa who was the chairman of the ad-hoc committee while presenting the 20 pages report on the crisis said peace has not fully returned to some of the affected communities.

The Speaker, Barr. Razak Atunwa, while reading the resolution of the House during Wednesday's plenary, urged the state government to end the crisis with full implementation of the state grazing reserve law.

The lawmakers noted that the implementation of the law would ensure proper monitoring of cattle reserves activities in all parts of the state.

They appealed to the state government to gazette the new grazing reserves to join the existing 17 grazing locations across the three senatorial districts of the state in order to eliminate clashes between herdsmen and the farmers.

The lawmakers also called on the veterinary and security officers in the state to check the influx of cattle reserves through regular registration of those willing to reside in any local government area of the state.

The legislators similarly urged the state government to implement the provisions of the state farmers and herdsmen settlement of dispute law of 2006.

They commended the state government and the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji lbrahim Sulu-Gambari for their prompt responses in settling the mayhem.

They also called for the payment of adequate compensation to farmers whose farms were damaged and those whose houses and property were destroyed during the crisis.
