Unilorin Recruitment: 70,000 jostle for 100 vacancies. ...as applicants lament institution's silence.

Date: 2014-11-26

Over 70,000 people who applied for the University of Ilorin’s job vacancies, which were made public in June, this year are jostling for less than a hundred available vacancies in the institution, investigation has revealed.

It was also gathered from competent sources in the University that applicants with strong connections have found their ways through the huddles of unemployment as they have been employed to fill some of the vacancies the mammoth applicants are battling for.

Our sources claimed that the University finds it difficult to screen the huge number of applicants for the limited positions resulting to its silence on the issue.

The university, has however, been silent on why applicants are yet to receive responses as the latter reportedly laments that no applicant has been shortlisted.

It would be recalled that the Federal Government directed the university to publicly advertise its vacancies in the newspapers shortly after the institution had closed its initial internal advertisement on 30th of June.

Some applicants who spoke with National Pilot on anonymity expressed worry over the university's silence on the recruitment.

Most of them expressed hope of getting employed in spite of the limited positions while others had resigned to fate as they noted that their time would not pass them.

Reacting to the allegation, the Registrar of the university, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, denied claims that the institution has 100 vacancies and employment some of the applicants.

The Registrar, who spoke with our reporter on phone yesterday, though could not be specific on the available vacancies, noted that there are more than a hundred vacancies and confirmed that over 70,000 applied for the university’s jobs.

On applicants' lamentation, Obafemi said they cannot teach the University’s management how it will run the school.

"If they say we advertised, yes! But if they say we are giving job to some people, this is blackmail on our University. What is the meaning of that? We didn't collect any kobo from anyone and they don't determine when we should do what we will do. Their agitation cannot enforce the process of recruitment which will only begin after necessary considerations", he said.

According to him, the management of the institution has not started the process of shortlisting, but candidates suitable for various posts would be shortlisted at the appropriate time.
