Flooding Hits Kwara Community
THE Idofin Odo-Ashe Community in Oke-Ero Local Government Area of Kwara has lost to flooding, the only bridge linking it to neighbouring communities.
An investigation by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday revealed that the flooding followed consistent downpour.
The collapse of the bridge has paralysed social-economic activities in the community.
Many of the residents who spoke with NAN on the issue said that the situation had forced them to be indoors, adding that they were making efforts to repair the bridge with wooden planks.
Mr Olu Sanni, President, Idofin Development Association, told NAN that flooding in the community required urgent intervention of the local, state and federal governments.
He said that flood had also destroyed houses, schools, church buildings and farm produce in the community.
"Flooding had led to the collapse of the only bridge connecting Idofin-Ehin-Afo to neighbouring communities such as Ayekale and Odo-Aga.
"This is a passionate appeal to the three tiers of government on the menace of flooding in our community," he said.
Sanni said that lack of drainage channels contributed to the flooding.
He also regretted non completion of the road linking the community with neighbouring Oko Community.
Mr Michael Olaiya, Secretary, Oke-Ero Local Government Council, told NAN that the council had forwarded to the state government, a letter written by the community for intervention.
The Traditional Ruler of Idofin Odo-Ashe, Oba Pius Oni, and the Chairman of the APC, Idofin Odo-Ashe Ward, Mr Michael Afolayan, also appealed for government intervention.
They said that the appeal became necessary to save the community members from the menace of flooding.
"We are strongly appealing to the government and relevant agencies to save our community from imminent shutdown due to flooding," Oni urged.
