Angry residents mob electricity officials

Date: 2014-09-05

Residents of Sabo-Oke area of Ilorin, Kwara State yesterday attacked workers of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) who went there to disconnect electricity supply over unpaid debts.

Daily Trust gathered that the residents also attacked men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) mobilized to control the situation. The incident, which occurred around noon, disrupted business activities in the area.

Sources said officials of the electricity company were about disconnecting electricity cables of debtors when some residents resisted the move which resulted in a fisticuff.

Residents who spoke to Daily Trust said they were protesting seven months of unsteady power supply which they said had significantly affected economic activities in the area.

The Business Manager, Challenge Business District of IBEDC, Engr. Kayode Moyosade, confirmed the incident, saying the residents were resisting disconnection of defaulters over flimsy excuses.
