Kwara Poly: Rector eligible for 2nd term - Staff

Date: 2014-06-02

As the first tenure of the Rector, Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Alhaji Mus’ud Elelu, winds up this month, a group of concerned senior staff of the institution, has said that he is eligible for a second term in office.

It would be recalled that Elelu, a former Senior Training Manager at Dailytrust Newspapers, Abuja, was appointed the rector of the institution in 2009 and he is expected to finish his first tenure in June.

But a recent publication by a group,  Concerned members of the Kwara State Polytechnic, accused him of lobbying for a second term, a move it called’ illegal’.

Reacting to the group, some concerned senior academic staff of the institution, faulted the group, adding that it misrepresented the fact.

The statement, which was signed by Tpl. J. T. Olayioye, Mr. O.O. Olowu, Mr. A. K. Salman  Mr. l. Akewusola,  Mr. N. A.Zubbair and Surveyor A. G. Aremu and dated May 15, and made available to National Pilot, in Ilorin over the weekend, said the extant law of the school is explicit on the appointment and re-appointment of the rector.

 “The assertion of the writers that “The law provides that Principal Officers of the Polytechnic and other tertiary institutions will enjoy a non-renewable tenure of five years” is far from the truth as this is contrary to the provisions of the Polytechnic law passed by the Kwara State House of Assembly, and assented to by the Executive Governor of the State.

”The Kwara State Polytechnic law Cap S 12 in section 17 Sub-section 2 states inter alia on the appointment of the Rector

 The Rector: shall be appointed by the Governor and shall hold office for a term of five ears and shall be eligible for reappointment only once for another term of five years only, which shall be non-renewable.

“For the appointment of other Principal Officers, the Law in Section 25 states that;

The Registrar, Bursar, Polytechnic Librarian, Director of Works, the Director of Medical Services shall hold office for a term of five years and may be re-appointed for another term of five years but thereafter; shall not be eligible for a re-appointment.

“Now, the hypothetical question is: are the Rector and the Registrar seeking tenure elongation? The answer is NO because their first terms have not lapsed, more so the Law allows for a second term for both officers if they so desire and the consenting Authority endorses, ‘’ the statement claimed.
