Put Nation Above Personal Interest, Says Kwara Speaker

Date: 2014-05-30

The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon. Razak Atunwa, urged politicians to always put national interest above other considerations in other for the country to overcome its numerous challenges and sustain democratic practice.

Atunwa who spoke with journalists in Ilorin yesterday on the occasion of this year's democracy day celebration, attributed the nation's predicament to protracted military rule and cautioned against acts capable of truncating the nation's democratic practice.

He noted with displeasure that the nation was currently faced with voting apathy and called for transparency in the nation's electoral process as well as accountability in governance, to restore confidence of Nigerians in the nation's democratic practice.

The Speaker enjoined politicians to always display the spirit of sportsmanship as the nation moves towards another round of general elections, pointing out that life and position were transient.

Atunwa equally warned against politicising measures that would curb insurgence, stressing that all stakeholders must be united to salvage the nation from the verge of destruction.
