Nigerian tertiary education not below Ghana, I'Coast, Malaysia - Unilorin VC

Date: 2014-04-07

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali has said that the education content of universities in Ghana, Malaysia and Ivory Coast was not better than that of Nigeria.

In a media chat with journalists in Ilorin on Sunday, he stated that Nigerians were seeking for tertiary education in those countries because of the inability of universities in Nigeria to accommodate all admission seekers.

According to him, it was needful to re-orientate admission seekers and their parents/guardians that polytechnics and other tertiary education other than university education were also good for human development, skill development and wealth creation.

The VC also said that many Nigerians prefer to engage in their doctorate degree programmes abroad because of better infrastructure which will assist them complete their programmes on time.

Ambali said, “A critical look at the academic content of the Nigerian educational curriculum shows it is not below standard. Then the government also directs us that every five years, curriculum should be reviewed to keep everybody in tune with the best international standard practices.

“I have been telling people that if you see our people go to Ghana, Ivory Coast or anywhere within reach, it is not because they are seeking for quality education, but merely seeking for tertiary education; because if we cannot absorb more than one third of the applicants, them the other two third that want education have to seek for where they can find it and they go for it.

“To cure the number of Nigerians emigrating to Ghana or other countries in the continent is to improve the carrying capacity of Nigerian universities. We should go out for advocacy visits as well as change the orientation of parents that it is not everybody that must have university degree. Skills acquisition is important and this can be gotten in our polytechnics. People should be encouraged to embrace polytechnic education.”
