Commissioner sad over residents' poor attitude to sanitation in Kwara
Alhaji Usman Mora, the Kwara Sate Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, on Saturday expressed disappointment over flagrant disobedience to the sanitation laws by some Ilorin residents.
Addressing newsmen shortly after the monthly sanitation exercise in Ilorin, the commissioner promised to furnish Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed with his observations during the exercise.
He said that the ministry would meet with security outfits, heads of commercial motorcycle riders’ associations and marketers on the need for people to observe the laws guiding the cleaning of the environment in the state.
Mora told the residents that it was a must for “everyone to obey the law no matter how highly placed in the society.”
He said henceforth, the ministry would intensify efforts to ensure proper enforcement of the sanitation law.
The presiding judge of the sanitation mobile court, Mr Abdulhamid Yusuf, described the lukewarm attitude of residents toward the exercise as “pathetic”.
The judge, who also expressed concern over absence of security during the exercise, said that the offenders brought to his court fled after being convicted and necessary fines imposed on them.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who monitored the exercise in some parts of the Ilorin reports that many residents were seen pursuing ends other that the sanitation.
At Taiwo, Unity, Emir’s Post-Office, Sango and Niger Roads, many residents were seen roaming about the streets while traders displayed their wares during the exercise.
Many of the road were characterised by movement of cars and motorcycles while many residents defied government’s earlier announcement for them to partake in the exercise. (NAN)
