APC registers over 374,000 members in Kwara - Secretary

Date: 2014-02-18

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kwara State, on Sunday said it had registered over 374,000 members since the commencement of the nationwide registration of party members.

The Interim State Secretary of the Party, Yemi Afolayan, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ilorin.

Mr. Afolayan said although the registration exercise should have ended on Feb, 10, it was still going on in the state because more people were turning up to register.

He said the extension of the period of registration was approved by the party's national headquarters.

The secretary gave the assurance that the party would hold its ward, local government and state congresses in March, ahead of the National Convention in April.

On the delay in the acceptance of Bukola Saraki's defection letter from the PDP to APC by the Senate, Mr. Afolayan said it was an indication that the PDP was "jittery".

He, however, added that Mr. Saraki had already registered as an APC member at his ward in Ilorin.

Mr. Saraki is among 11 PDP senators who wrote the Senate President, David Mark, that they were decamping to the APC. Mr. Mark has refused to read their letter on the senate floor, as constitutionally required, saying he would not do so because the matter was already in court.

Mr. Afolayan also dismissed the claim that the APC was losing members to rival parties, saying that those that defected had "no electoral values".

The APC interim Secretary commended the Kwara State Police Command for its pledge to be fair and professional in relating with all the registered political parties operating in the state.
