Kwara to establish IPP
The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, has said that his administration will soon ensure the establishment of an Independent Power Plant in the state.
According to him, the IPP will ultimately generate 100 megawatts of electricity. He added that it will be largely fuelled by gas.
In an interview with journalists in Ilorin on Wednesday on the sidelines of the government's public enlightenment programme, 'The Governor Explains,' Ahmed said the state would maximise the opportunities inherent in the unbundling of the power sector by the Federal Government.
The governor stated that the IPP was expected to generate initial 30 megawatts annually for use by hospitals, educational institutions and business concerns in line with his administration's Shared Prosperity programme of ensuring human capital development and industrial growth.
"We are also looking at the Independent Power Plant. We are happy that the Federal Government has unbundled the energy sector.
"As Kwarans, we see ourselves keying into the enormous opportunity that the Federal Government has unleashed. We are starting up an independent power plant, largely fuelled by gas," Ahmed said.
He identified efficient power supply as an essential stimulus for rapid socio-economic and industrial growth.
