IGP knows how to end Rivers crisis - Saraki

Date: 2014-01-27

The Inspector General of Police Mohammed Dikko Abubakar knows what to do to end the crisis in Rivers State, Senator Bukola Saraki has said.

Saraki, who is a former governor of Kwara State, said what is happening in Rivers is small compared to what Kwara experienced during the time of late Governor Mohammed Lawal (1999-2003) recalling that the IGP was then the state commissioner of police and he demonstrated capacity and maturity to tackle the crisis.

Insisting that the situation in Rivers State is "wrong", Saraki said as former chairman of the Nigerian Governors' Forum (NGF), there were occasions when cases were made for the redeployment of police commissioners who were not working cordially with their state governors.

Speaking with newsmen in Ilorin, the senator maintained that if not for the ability the IGP showed in handling the then political crisis in Kwara State as a police commissioner, he would probably not have been governor. He maintained that everything necessary must be done to avert what he described as impending anarchy in the state.

"In the past, they have changed commissioners of police in the interest of stability of a state. The constitution is clear that the governor will give direction on police matters. And if it doesn't work, then you agree that an individual or the governor is the problem," he said.
