Nigeria Political Situation Worrisome - Emir of Ilorin
The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, yesterday described the nation’s political situation as troubling.
The chairman of Kwara State’s Council of traditional rulers, who made this comment at the opening of the 48th annual conference of Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), cautioned his subjects against allowing partisan politics to cause disaffection among them.
He advised them to borrow a leaf from the Second Republic where difference in political affiliation did not cause disaffection between the two Dosumu brothers of Lagos.
He recalled that while one of the Dosumus was a minister on the platform of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN), the other was a chieftain of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in Lagos.
The Emir who made reference to a portion of the holy Qur’an appealed to the people of Ilorin Emirate to shun divisive tendencies to further ensure the development of the area.
LEADERSHIP reports that about 350 traditional chiefs in the Emirate led by the Magaji Nda of Ilorin, Alhaji Mohammed Woru, expressed their support for Senator Bukola Saraki’s political leadership of the state.
Earlier, the national President of IEDPU, Justice Saka Yusuf appealed to the Emir to assist in mending the ‘cracks’ in the Saraki political dynasty.
He admonished Senator Gbemisola Saraki, who was the lady chairperson at the event, not to allow fifth columnists to rubbish her father’s legacy.
He praised the state government for repealing the state Legal Notice No. 6 of 2013 and designation of certain places as urban areas.
Yusuf, however, called for the abrogation of the land charge law.
“ The land charge policy looks foreign or alien to the people of Ilorin Emirate. It is our sincere appeal that that Ilorin Emirate indigenes and Kwarans generally should be exonerated from paying the land charge,” he stated.
