Oct 26 LG poll ploy to scheme us out, says APC
Victory of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Kwara State local government election scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2013 may be a forgone conclusion, as the party appears to be contesting the poll without a formidable opposition.
However, it is not yet clear whether or not the election would hold as scheduled, as the major opposition party in the state, All Progressives Congress (APC), is already in court seeking the postponement of the election.
Interim leader of the APC in the state, Bunmi Olusona, expressed hope that the election would not hold as planned by Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC).
He alleged that the arrangement of the election was with a plot by the PDP to scheme out APC from participating in it and ensure that it contested the poll without a serious opposition.
He stated: “PDP has always been looking for a way to scheme us out of the election because they know if we slug it out with them, they will fail. They laid the trap, but we have gone to court.”
Besides, members of the PDP who seem to be loyal to the national leadership led by Bamanga Tukur, have also headed for court to urge the court to stop the state electoral body (KWASIEC) from conducting the election.
The KWSIEC had announced that the election would be conducted as scheduled with only three parties namely PDP, Labour Party (LP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) contesting it.
According to the electoral body, the three parties are the only ones participating in the election because aside their candidates no candidate of any other party collected nomination form.
But it was gathered that the APC and PDP members that are in court over the election will on Tuesday move a motion that the election should not hold.
The APC, which is a newly-registered party, is seeking postponement of the election because it is unable to meet up with the schedules of the election by virtue of the time of its registration.
The PDP members loyal to the Tukur leadership are seeking stoppage of the election on the ground that emergence of the PDP candidates for the election was not done in accordance with provisions of the party’s constitution. They are also praying the court to declare the election of the candidates null and void.
“The announcement by KWASIEC that the LP and SDP are contesting with PDP is a ruse. The LP, like APC, has been calling for postponement of the election. Those contesting with PDP have been pre-arranged. It is actually a one-horse race. It is not a proper race where there should be more than one horse contesting,” Olusona added.
