Kwara LG polls: Aspirants resign as appointments for council chairs

Date: 2013-08-06

Ahead of the October 26, elections into the 16 local Councils in Kwara state, no fewer than 25 political office holders have resigned their appointments to run for chairmanship positions.

The aspiring candidates, who resigned their appointments, cut across the 16 local government areas of the state.
The leadership of the state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had given last Friday (August 2) as ultimatum for all aspirants holding political offices to resign or forgo their chairmanship ambitions.

Checks by blueprint correspondent yesterday revealed that among those who have resigned as at Sunday's night were the Special Adviser to the governor on Emergency and Relief Services, Alhaji Musa Abdullahi; the Chairman of the State Sports Council, Lanre Giwa; Special Assistant to the deputy governor, Mora Ashim and a member of the Governing Council of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Taiwo Alabi.
Others are the Vice Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government and the Supervisory Councillor for Works and Housing in the council, Surajudeen Babatunde, Waheed Adebayo as well as a member of the Kwara Investment and Property Development Company, Olawale Olawomo and the PDP Chairman for  Ifelodun Local Government, Tunde Salami.

It was gathered that more aspirants holding political positions would resign by yesterday as the leadership of the party has given them the 'grace' of today to quit their offices or stand disqualified from the race.
Investigation however indicated that some aspirants have found themselves in dilemma over taking a decision on the directive as they do not want to leave "certainty for uncertainty".
