Kwara LG Election: Crisis looms as Saraki imposes candidate on Ekitis

Date: 2013-08-05

Crisis looms in Ekiti Kwara council over Dr. Bukola Saraki's imposition of his own candidate as against the wishes of the local party faithfuls in the zone.

The decision of the former governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki, to impose one of his aides, Akintoba Fatigun, as candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti Local Government Area for the forthcoming council election in the state, has been generating serious tension among the people.

Our correspondent learnt that the crisis started when Saraki allegedly informed some chiefs of the party on Friday and told them that he wanted the Ekiti council ticket for Fatigun, who is currently serving as his media aide.

The grouse of the Ekiti council politicians is that it was the same Saraki who insisted that any aspirant with the best record of performance would be considered.

Specifically, the politicians said Saraki had told the PDP chiefs in the state that they should present to him, names of three people from each council whose contributions had boosted the image of the party in their respective areas.

They wondered why the senator would now impose on them, a man who had done nothing at all in his ward, and who had a credibility crisis that would be a subject of discuss in the media.

They also argued that Fatigun who holds just a WASC certificate but claimed to be a journalist and had been working as S. A. Media to Saraki since 1999 was not a fit and proper person to be the chairman of Ekiti local council with its high concentration of intellectuals.

One of the leaders who craved anonymity said, "That young man being imposed on us is not a journalist that he claimed to be. He had no certificate other than WASC.

"Somebody with credentials and credibility crisis cannot fly our ticket. We have knowledgeable aspirants who are well respected on ground. We won't accept Fatigun at all.

Our correspondent further learnt that Fatigun is a cousin of the out-going chairman while other wards with aspirants with impressive record of performances had not produced the chairman of the council.

Concerted bur repeated efforts were made to reach Mr. Fatigun for his comments. SMS sent to his phone were delivered but not replied.
