Unilorin ASUU defies strike order
The Chairman of the Unilorin chapter of the union, Professor Wahab Egbewole, in a telephone interview with The Herald, said that the university's unionism is for development.
According to him, the university's union sees no reason in the frequent strike actions of the national body of the union since the issues under review can amicably be resolved with the Federal Government in a round table discussion.
"For more than ten years now, we have not been part of any strike. We understand that it is something that has to do with the Federal Government and ASUU. But as far as Unilorin is concerned, our position is unionism for development. We believe that this issue can be resolved with the government in a round-table discussion
"We had joined in the strike several times but we discovered that at the end of the day, nothing reasonable would be achieved. So why can't we stay away? And we don't have any apology for it," he maintained.
The National President of the union, Dr. Nasir Fagge had on Monday, in Lagos, announced an indefinite nationwide strike action to be embarked upon by the union in protest over the members' earned allowance.
According to Fagge, the Federal Government had reneged in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the union in 2009 to pay the lecturers their earned allowance.
He disclosed that the government agreed with the union to pay the lecturers N12,500 each per month as earned allowance but it has failed to fulfill the agreement.
