Govenor's wife adopts 600 pupils

Date: 2013-06-21

Wife of the Kwara State governor, Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed, through the Adopt-a-Child initiative of her LEAH Charity Foundation has given educational empowerment to no fewer than 600 pupils selected from public schools across the central senatorial district of the state.
The governor's wife who spoke through her Special Assistant on Administration and Strategy,  Mr. Lanre Bello, at the flag-off of the Adopt-a-Child programme held at Asa Local Government secretariat of the state on Wednesday said that the gesture was aimed at alleviating the sufferings of the core poor by providing the basic educational needs of their children free of charge.
She therefore enjoined parents to take proper care of the materials and to use them for the intended purpose even as she advised the beneficiaries to take their education seriously toward securing an assured tomorrow.
In her remarks, the Administrator of LEAH Foundation, Mrs. Bukola Akinleye, explained that though education is free in Kwara State there's more to going to school than paying school fees.
According to her, Mrs. Ahmed took on the challenge of providing the school needs of indigent pupils including school uniforms, bags, shoes, socks, water bottles and stationery to enable them go to school and learn in a conducive environment, adding that, about 80 children have been adopted in the past.
Akinyele also called on well meaning individuals to extend helping hands to the LEAH Foundation with a view to empowering the less privileged in the society and ensuring that every child counted in the scheme of things.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of Asa local government, Dr. M. Yahaya, described the educational empowerment of the foundation as a huge complement to the education policy thrust of the Ahmed administration, saying that, the best legacy to give a child is quality education.
