DG advocates review of corps members' allowances
Director-General, National Youth Service Corps, Brig. Gen. Nnamdi Okore-Affia, has urged state governments to review the allowances of corps members in order to enhance their perfomance.
He spoke at the 2013 batch 'B' pre-orientation workshop in Ilorin on Wednesday.
The DG also urged the states to support the building of NYSC permanent orientation camps.
He noted that managing youths for national service required a lot of dynamism and constant review of strategies to ensure that they were given the best platform to serve the nation effectively.
According to him, the NYSC will continue to examine all aspects of the scheme with a view to evolving viable options in managing identified challenges.
He said, "The orientation programme provides an avenue for the induction of corps members into national service by exposing them to the ideals of nation-building and infusing in them qualities of courage, endurance, selfless service and patriotism, which are basic ingredients that our youths must possess for the upliftment of our country.
"In addition, the orientation affords corps members the opportunity of having a foretaste of the culture and ways of life of the people of their states of deployment thereby paving way for their accelerated integration with members of the host communities."
The state Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, said the NYSC was the biggest promoter of unity and social integration in the country.
Ahmed, represented by his deputy, Mr. Peter Kishira, noted that scheme was a tool for mobilising youths for national unity.
Calling on stakeholders to continue to support the NYSC, he reiterated the commitment of his administration to supporting the organisation.
