"We Must Defend & Sustain this Hard Won Democracy" - Saraki

Date: 2013-05-29

Below is the text of Senator Bukola Saraki's Democracy Day Message.

Today, we celebrate the 14th year of uninterrupted democratic rule in Nigeria, marking the beginning of a leadership that is inclusive and represents the interest of every Nigerian.

In every corner of our country, this special day reminds us of the valor, vision and dream of passionate Nigerians from all parts of the country, who came together in unity of purpose to ensure a well deserved democratic rule after a long and tough military rule.

In retrospect, the last 14years have been filled with many challenges, the nation has been faced with tough times- yet our history shows these are not insurmountable, we only need to draw the perseverance of those before us; like i said many months ago, our dark days as a nation are over and the bright days are here. I know as a patriotic Nigerian, Nigerians really don't anticipate the solution to every problem from the government, they don't anticipate those of us in National Assembly to agree on all issues, but certainly, Nigerians expect and deserve for us to put the people's interests first by setting aside our personal differences to create an enabling environment that will allow us all to live peacefully, businesses to flourish and maintain total respect for the rule of law.

On this note, I celebrate every Nigerian at home and in diaspora , human right activists, our service men and women, religious leaders, military men and even those that have been witch haunted for standing for the truth among others, who played important roles in attaining and maintaining our democratic system. Remembering these heroes go beyond a holiday in our homes but ensuring that the will of Nigerians of all social status, tribes, ages and religions to embrace the true spirit of a statesman, understand our differences, join hands in unity beyond words and shoulder the responsibility of re-building Nigeria knowing that no one can build this nation except we do come into reality soon.

As we guide our nation into our bright future and come together in the enduring spirit to begin that work anew; we must defend and sustain this hard won democracy, we must be courageous, determined and strive to put a democracy in place that other nations emulate. on behalf of the Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology, the people of Kwara central, I wish Nigerians in the world over, Happy Democracy Day.

Long Live Kwara Central! Long Live Senate Committee on Environment! Long Live Federal Republic of Nigeria!

Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki CON
