Deaf Persons Stage Protest in Ilorin

Date: 2013-05-08

The deaf people under the aegis of Nigerian Association of the Deaf have marched through the city of Ilorin, Kwara State demanding for better care and understanding from the government and country in general.

The protesters numbering about 30, marched round government ministries, the state House of Assembly and Government House, calling for adequate recognition and care in the country like other Nigerians.

The Association’s National President, Alhaji Suliman Dagbo in an interview in Ilorin at the opening of the 2nd International Week of the Deaf, said the march was part of the programme to sensitise relevant authorities and entire society to their challenges, plight and needs with a view to mitigating them.

Dagbo said, the deaf should not be categorised as among the physically challenged people, pointing out that they too could contribute more positively, to the advancement of society if only they be so recognized.

“One of the challenges we are facing is lack of recognition by the government. Also, some parents do not understand us. Our teachers are not given adequate training. We also have problems of communication”, he said.

He added; “There are no interpreters of television and radio programmes so we can know what is going on in the society. These are the most important challenges we are facing.
