Kwara House Frowns at Resurgence of Heaps of Refuse in Ilorin
The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Honourable Razak Atunwa has enjoined the state Ministry of Environment and Tourism to give legal backing to its Waste Commercialisation Policy to ensure proper enforcement of the new policy.
The Speaker gave the piece of advice in Ilorin when the commissioner for the ministry, Mr Anthony Towoju, appeared before the committee of the House shortly after considering a report on the increasing heaps of refuse at bridges on Unity, Emir and Amilegbe roads, and poor sanitary condition of medians in the state capital.
Hon. Atunwa along with other members insisted that the new Waste Commercialisation Policy without necessary legal backing would not work.
The Speaker, who directed the commissioner to see how it worked in some states of the federation, urged him to be robust in thinking to sustain the good name of the state and maintain healthy environment.
The Legislative House also expressed dissatisfaction over the removal of Roro bins at the GRA by the ministry as a result of the new Waste Commercialisation Policy.
In his response, the commissioner identified inadequate environmental sanitary officers, Roro bins, dump sites and logistics, as some of the problems confronting his ministry.
He also blamed the non-performance of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) to the inability of his ministry to respond to the current environmental challenge bedevilling the state capital.
