Missing Kwara Nursing Student Found in Police Custody
A 20-year-old student of the Kwara State College of Nursing Sciences, who was declared missing on January 22, 2026, has been found in police custody, sparking a heated debate over the legality of her detention.
The student, whose disappearance led to a massive five-day search and an intensive social media campaign, was reportedly traced to a police cell on Tuesday, January 27. Her brother broke the news, revealing that she had been held incommunicado since the day she left home, with her phone confiscated and no formal notification sent to her family.
According to family sources, the police vaguely linked her detention to an ongoing investigation involving her friend and boyfriend. However, no specific charges have been brought against her.
The revelation has triggered widespread condemnation online, with Nigerians citing a breach of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), which mandates that suspects should not be detained for more than 48 hours without being charged to court.
"How can a student go missing for five days only to be found in a police station without her family being informed?" one social media user questioned, reflecting the general sentiment of outrage.
While the family expressed immense gratitude to the online community for the pressure that led to her discovery, they are now demanding her immediate and unconditional release. The Kwara State Police Command has yet to issue a formal statement explaining the lack of communication or the specific grounds for her prolonged detention.
