Greater access to ICT will transform Nigeria - Rector
The Rector, Kwara State Polytechnic, Alhaji Masud Elelu, has said that greater access to information and communication technology will boost Nigeria's development.
Speaking during the inauguration of the polytechnic's ICT part-time training programme in Ilorin on Friday, Elelu said efforts should be made to ensure more ICT penetration, especially in the rural areas.
He said ICT had revolutionised production and service delivery globally, adding that every worker who aspired to rise in his career must be ICT compliant.
The rector stated that without ICT literacy, employees would not maximise their potential and achieve job satisfaction.
According to him, KwaraPoly will engage in ICT consultancy services and trainings.
Elelu said, "Be you a worker or a senior staff, any where you are today, you must be conversant with ICT. That is why even in the entertainment or fashion industry, ICT is necessary.
"So, if children of about five or seven years are conversant with ICT, why should our adults who are already working not have ICT literacy? It will come to a point where anyone who has no ICT skill will not be employed; such a person may not be promoted."
"ICT is playing a role in the well-being of even illiterates. ICT even has a role to play in the work of even mechanics, plumbers and fashion designers. They need modern training on how to do things now and all these will involve ICT," he added.
The rector also called on the government to ensure that polytechnics get more involved in ICT trainings and certification, saying polytechnics rather colleges of education or even universities were the best institutions to provide skill training on ICT.
"The polytechnic is the right place to acquire diplomas in ICT because what we do here is skill training," Elelu said.
