Kwara's Ilorin South Group Labels APC's Zoning Demand 'Premature and Unnecessary

Date: 2025-04-29

Youths and stakeholders in Ilorin South, Kwara State, have rejected calls by some APC elders in Kwara Central to zone the 2027 gubernatorial ticket to Kwara North.

The group, in a statement issued on Monday, 28 April 2025, dismissed the APC elders' advocacy as "needless and ill-timed," emphasizing that while they support development across the Ilorin Emirate and Kwara North, discussions on zoning are premature and counterproductive at this stage.

"The purported declaration by a few elders does not reflect the broader consensus of Kwara Central APC elders and stakeholders," the statement read. "While we recognize the importance of equity and inclusivity in governance, now is not the time for such divisive debates. Our focus should remain on unity and collective progress of APC and Kwara state in general."

The group urged political actors to prioritize good governance and merit over regional considerations, noting that competence and capacity should determine leadership selection rather than geographical zoning.

The group further stressed that Political analysts across the state suggest that the statement signals growing tensions within Kwara's political landscape as different factions position themselves ahead of future elections.

No official response has been issued by the Kwara North elders who made the initial zoning demand.
