Press Release: CPC vows to resist plot to remove Offa LG boss

Date: 2013-02-04

Below is the text of a press release by the Kwara state chapter of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC)

PThe CPC in Kwara has been reliably informed that there is an ongoing evil plot to illegally remove the Chairman of Offa Local Government Area, Prince Saheed Popoola over the Offa-Erinle communal clash. While not holding forth for the Council Chairman, who we believe has done everything humanly possible (including alerting the security agencies to the latest clashes) to keep peace between the warring factions, we however find this alleged sinister orchestration by the PDP-led administration in the state as a dangerous ill wind that blows no good. For us at the CPC, it beggars belief that the PDP-led Kwara State Government has decided to ply the ignoble and treacherous route of cheap and potentially precarious politics instead of decimating its energy on how to successfully bring calm and tranquility to an already traumatized population. We find it out rightly beyond comprehension that Mr. Fatai Ahmed, the Chief Security Officer of the state and the one in whose hands the security apparatus of the state resides would shift the blame of the communal crisis on the innocent Council Chairman.

We make bold to say that since the obviously mismanaged bottomless pit called security vote is an exclusive preserve of the Governor and his PDP goons, then the buck of securing life and property of the people of the state stops squarely on his table. The PDP-led Government in the state must therefore admit its stack incompetence to stem the tide of communal hostility and bloodletting across the state. At no time in the history of the state has our corporate existence as a people been so dangerously threatened by communal strife, statewide orgy of violence, hooliganism and cult clashes. The state, unlike never before, is now daily inundated with terrible news of avoidable deaths, ranging from cultist clashes, ghastly motor accidents, ritual killings, industrial ruins and now communal hostilities. If we are then to adopt the warped logic of the PDP-led government, do we then as a result of the siege and the seeming crude ineptitude of the Government, call for the removal of the State Governor under whose nose all this bloodshed is engulfing the state?

The CPC will therefore not take lightly to any plot to illegally remove the duly elected Chairman of the Offa Local Government over a communal violence that preceded his administration. Since all the past surreptitious plot of the PDP to hick jack the machinery of the lone progressives controlled enclave in the state has fell flat in their faces, this latest attempt shall similarly pass. But as vigilant champion of legality, constitutionality and the rule of law, we will not fold our arms and watch the PDP deliberately orchestrates violence in opposition stronghold and still go behind to blame the latter for it.

And this therefore informed our resolve to earnestly alert the public to this dangerous ploy. We especially wish to urge our venerated traditional institutions, security agencies and all public spirited Kwarans at home and in Diaspora to call the state government to order, as this wicket gambit is capable of precipitating a political chaos of epic proportion between the state and the people who are keenly watching the theater of absurd.

We advise the state government to face the huge task of public governance and stop chasing shadows or muzzling dissenting voices

Alhaji Suleiman Buhari
CPC Chairman, Kwara State
Nigeria
