Police Commissioner Cautions Kwara Vigilantes on Illegal Suspect Handling
As highlighted by Daily Post, Kwara State Police Commissioner, Victor Olaiya, has cautioned vigilante groups in the state against resorting to jungle justice.
Responding to journalist questions on Wednesday regarding the recent killing of University of Ilorin graduate, Lanre Adebayo, the Commissioner issued a stern directive to vigilante members not to overstep legal boundaries when handling suspects.
Commissioner Olaiya, speaking during a parade of suspected criminals at the state police command in Ilorin, emphasized the importance of thorough security training for vigilante members to ensure lawful conduct.
Victor disclosed that “late Lanre got into argument with the vigilante group at Ita-Elepa area of Ilorin metropolis and they decided to teach him a lesson which ended tragically.”
DAILY POST recalls that Lanre Adebayo was on his way home after a visit to his mother in the area.
He was allegedly macheted to death in the encounter with the vigilante group.
Lanre, sources said, was buried on Wednesday, last week at the Oke-Ose public cemetery.
The police commissioner said an investigation into the matter was still ongoing, adding “you know some investigations take time to get to the root of the matter.”
He also referred to another recent incident over which another vigilante group arrested and detained a suspect and demanded N1.5m for his release, forcing a lawyer to petition the police command.
