Kwara to host cashew producing countries tomorrow

Date: 2012-02-29

Stakeholders in cashew industry from four European countries and many African nations will tomorrow (Thursday), converge on Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, for a one-day workshop.

The workshop, scheduled to hold at Kwara Hotels, Ilorin beginning at 9:00am, has as its theme: "The new cashew order."

The participants, drawn from major cashew exporting and importing countries, including Brazil, India, Singapore, Vietnam and African cashew producing nations, are expected to brainstorm on how to move the cashew business forward.

This was contained in a statement jointly issued and signed by the National Secretary, National Cashew Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Moshood Shogo, and the state Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaba, a copy of which was made available to Blueprint, in Ilorin yesterday.

The statement stated that it is now mandatory for members to bring hybrid cashew nuts to the market and that they (members) must comply with the use of jute bags before their products could be accepted.

It added that efforts were being made by the association to import some hybrid seedlings from Vietnam for distribution to cashew farmers.
