Confusion as Contractor Seizes Offa LG Properties
Pandemonium broke out at Offa Local Government Secretariat on Wednesday when the High Court in Offa issued a warrant for the sale of goods and chattels of Offa Local Government Council, over the failure of the council to redeem its financial obligations to a contractor.
In a warrant headed: "In The High Court of Justice (District Court of Kwara State) between Evangelist Faith Folaranmi and Offa Local Government," the warrant stated in part," Take notice that a warrant
has been issued for the attachment and sales of goods and chattels of Offa Local Government."
In a bid to execute the court judgment, the plaintiff and his lawyers, with two police men at about 3.30pm were seen towing the council's legislative bus out of the secretariat before a legislator obstructed the towing vehicle with his car, which caused the pandemonium, as distress calls were spiritedly made to other councilors who rushed to the secretariat to arrest the embarrassing situation.
Chairman of the council, Alhaji Saheed Popoola, who was away in Enugu for a conference, had in a telephone interview explained that the printing contract was executed by the immediate past administration of Barrister Segun Olawoyin and that the council had appealed to the contractor to exercise patience, but he decided to opt for the court, adding that the Council would appeal the judgment of the court, even as he stated that they were trying to settle the matter amicably.
A copy of the warrant was also pasted on the Council's grader parked in front of the Chairman's office, which signifies that it is part of the goods being targeted for sale by the court.
Members of staff of the local government secretariat came out in droves to witness the drama which lasted several hours with the legislators demanding the confiscation of any property other than their legislative bus.
