Lawyer advises politicians to shun dirty politics, embrace fair play

Date: 2022-07-23

An Ilorin-based legal practitioner, Mr Olaitan Abdulkareem, has advised politicians to shun 'dirty politics' and embrace fair play in the 2023 general elections.

Abdulkareem, who gave the advice in Ilorin on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria , said politics should not be a do or die affair.

According to him, many politicians are too desperate to emerge winners, not minding the consequences.

“Accept the outcome of elections and allow a fair contest.

Don't make it a do or die game.

If you lose today, you may win tomorrow.

“Avoid sending thugs to attack political opponents all in the name of politics.

See your opponent as one of your family members.

“There is no need to go dirty and hard before you get what you want.

You can use your maturity and attitude to convince voters to accept you,” he said.

Abdulkareem advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be transparent and treat every candidate equally.

He urged the electoral body not to betray the trust the public already had in it.

“All eyes are watching, both locally and internationally.

INEC must live up to expectations to sustain democracy in the country,” he said.
